Spirit of ANZAC prize

Each year, the Victorian Government stages the Victorian Spirit of ANZAC Prize Schools Competition. Year Nine students are invited to submit entries, including essays, poems, multimedia, artwork, web pages, digital, audio and video presentations and musical compositions, which explore what the Spirit of ANZAC means to young people today. Each year ten recipients of the Victorian Spirit of ANZAC Prize are selected to participate in an overseas study tour to sites of significant campaigns involving Australian troops.

2007-08 Victorian Spirit of ANZAC Prize Schools Competition


The 2007-08 Victorian Spirit of ANZAC Prize Schools Competition was officially launched in June 2007 and entries closed on 12 October 2007. The ten students selected to travel on the 2008 Study Tour to Greece, Crete, Singapore and Malaysia were announced by the Premier John Brumby on 14 March 2008.

2006 Schools Competition


The 2006 competition selected ten students to travel on the 2007 Study Tour to Turkey, France, Belgium and the United Kingdom in April 2007. The following ten students were announced by the Premier on 16 February 2007:

The 2007 Study Tour was led by Mr Tony Robinson, Parliamentary Secretary assisting the Premier as Minister for Veterans’ Affairs. The tour group was accompanied by:
  • Major Jim Barry, Veteran and Chair of the Central Selection Panel
  • Mr John Coulson, Project Coordinator
  • Mrs Pam Cupper, Horsham College
  • Mr James MacIsaac, Executive Director, Youth, Seniors, Veterans and Disability, Department of Planning and Community Development

  • Mr Rob Webster, Senior Vice President, RSL Victorian Branch

2005 Schools Competition


The ten students selected to represent Victoria on the 2006 Victorian Spirit of ANZAC Prize Study Tour to Singapore, Vietnam and Japan were:

  • The Honourable Steve Bracks MP, Premier of Victoria, met with the study group in Singapore


2004 Schools Competition


2004 marked the inaugural Victorian Spirit of ANZAC Schools Competition. Nine students were selected to represent Victoria as members of the 2005 Study Tour to England, Belgium and Northern France:

The 2005 Spirit of ANZAC Study Tour was conducted from 15-27 April 2005. Students travelled through England, Belgium and France, visiting many sites of significance to Australian service personnel. The students were accompanied by:
  • Major General David McLachlan, Victorian RSL State President
  • Mr Tony Charlton, Voice of Victorian Veterans
  • Bruce Mildenhall MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier
  • Tour Coordinator, Mr John Coulson
  • Teacher Chaperones Mrs Cathy Remer (Robinvale SC) and Mr Lachlan Lee (Mercy Regional College, Camperdown)
  • The Honourable Steve Bracks MP, Premier of Victoria, met with the study group at certain points of the tour.
